Gun Storage – Legal Compliance and Security
Legal definition:
The act of storing a weapon consists of depositing it, at home or in another authorized location, in a safe or non-portable security cabinet, strongroom or fortified house, as well as applying a padlock, activating mechanisms or removing parts that prevent the weapon from firing.
(Article 2, paragraph 5, subparagraph o, of Law 12/2011, 27 April)
▸ Two stages of weapon storage: ▸ First: application of devices such as a trigger lock, preventing firing. ▸ Second: storage in a safe or non-portable security cabinet, the main focus of this publication.
▸ Mandatory by law:
(Article 32 of the Weapons Law)
Holders of C, D or Home Detention licenses must have a safe or non-portable cabinet when they have more than 2 weapons of the same class (except class B1, only 2 are allowed).
If the total number of weapons exceeds 25, the use of a strongroom or fortified house is mandatory.
Types of Safes and Their Advantages
Mechanical safes: These operate without additional accessories, such as batteries. The key cannot be changed without technical intervention, and access must be restricted to a select few users.
▸ Recommended for situations where only trusted users access the vault.
Digital electronic safes:
They allow for quick and convenient password changes. Ideal for when a user no longer works for the location or company. The password can be changed after opening, ensuring greater security.
(Some companies change the sequence of numbers daily to avoid leaking information.)
▸ It works normally with internal batteries, and the use of external emergency batteries is recommended.
Digital safes with security key:
They allow opening in case of forgotten password or dead batteries, with reprogramming of the secret after use.
Delay lock:
▸ Device that requires a programmable wait before opening. ▸ Used in banks, lottery shops, and high-value businesses. ▸ Acts as a robbery deterrent, forcing the agent to wait, increasing the chance of capture.
