Legal definition: The act of storing a firearm consists of depositing it at home or in another authorized location, in a safe or non-portable security cabinet, strongroom or fortified house, as well as applying a padlock, activating mechanisms or removing parts that prevent the firearm from firing. (Article 2, no. 5, al. o, of Law 12/2011, April 27)


Two moments of guarding the weapon: ▸ First: application of devices such as a trigger lock, preventing the weapon from firing.

▸ Second: store in a safe or non-portable security cabinet, the focus of this publication.


Legal obligation (Article 32 of the Weapons Law):

Holders of C, D or Home Detention licenses must have a safe or non-portable cabinet when there are more than 2 weapons of the same class (except class B1, up to 2 weapons).

▸ For more than 25 weapons, the use of a strongroom or fortified house is mandatory.


Types of Safes and Their Advantages


Mechanical safes: These operate without additional accessories, such as batteries. The key cannot be changed without technical intervention, and access must be restricted to a select few. ▸ Recommended for situations where only trusted users have access.


Digital electronic safes:

They allow for quick password changes, ideal for when the previous user is no longer working. The password can be changed after opening, increasing security. Some companies change the password sequence daily to prevent information leaks.

▸ It works with internal batteries, and it is recommended to use external emergency batteries.


Digital safes with security keys: They allow opening in case of forgotten password or dead batteries, with reprogramming of the code after use.


Delay lock: ▸ Device that requires a programmable wait before opening. ▸ Used in banks, lottery shops, and high-value businesses. ▸ Acts as a theft deterrent, forcing the agent to wait, increasing the chance of capture.
